AEW’s new Clockwork Carnage match came together for a very practical reason. According to a new backstage report, the company simply didn’t have enough time to build a traditional world title main event for WrestleDream.

Speaking during a Self Made Session, Self Made Pro said he was told AEW decided to go with the new match concept because the pay-per-view is only two weeks away, making it difficult to properly establish a one-on-one championship feud.

“What I was told about with Clockwork Carnage is that part of why they’re doing it is that they don’t have enough time to properly build to a singles pay-per-view main event because WrestleDream will be in two weeks.”

Instead of rushing a singles program, the report claims AEW felt this was a good opportunity to introduce something different while still making the world title match feel like a major attraction.

“And so it just makes sense to, for now, do something fun and unique with this concept.”

Self Made Pro also said he was told AEW already has one eye on the future. If the debut goes over well with fans, the company is interested in making Clockwork Carnage an annual WrestleDream tradition.

“I was told that if this goes well, they’re going to make Clockwork Carnage a yearly tradition for WrestleDream.”

The match was officially announced on the October 3 edition of Collision and will feature eight wrestlers competing in a two-stage format for the AEW World Championship. The participants still haven’t been revealed, but if this report is accurate, AEW may be hoping this becomes more than just a one-off experiment.
