Powerlifting champion Emilie Mouchet got the kind of WWE offer plenty of athletes would jump at, but she decided to walk away from it.
The French powerlifting world champion revealed on Instagram that WWE offered her a contract after her London tryout, but after thinking it over, she decided Orlando was not the move.
“It is time to announce that WWE offered me a contract, and I said no.”
Mouchet explained that WWE brought her in for a tryout about two months ago, where officials were watching how coachable she was and whether she improved during the process. Clearly, she made an impression, because a few weeks later, WWE came calling with an actual offer.
“Those who remember know that I was called to a WWE tryout, which took place in London about two months ago. During this tryout, they were checking if you were coachable and whether your evolution from Day 1 to the final day was good. Obviously, a few weeks later, out of the blue, they called me and wanted to offer me a WWE contract.”
That kind of call would have most people running to sign, but Mouchet said it hit her with excitement and doubt at the same time. Wrestling was never really the plan for her, and the idea of completely changing her life for something she did not dream about gave her pause.
“I might as well tell you that, at that moment, it was a mix of excitement and questioning because it fell on me a little, and I just don’t plan on doing basic wrestling stuff.”
After reading the contract and really sitting with the decision, Mouchet said she realized WWE was not who she was or what she wanted. She loves powerlifting, she is focused on her projects with her partner, and she is also in the final year of her master’s degree.
“So, after reflecting and reading the contract, I decided to simply say no because I realized this isn’t what I wanted, and above all, it was not who I am. I just told myself that I love what I’m doing now, that I was already practicing powerlifting and getting to share crazy moments in this environment, and simply working on my projects with my man.”
The biggest issue was the commitment. Mouchet said leaving for Orlando for three years to chase wrestling just was not something she truly wanted, especially when WWE was not a lifelong dream for her.
“I’m also realizing that I’m in the last year of my master’s degree, and me leaving for Orlando for three years is not something I necessarily dream of. It made me think, and I realized it wasn’t what I wanted.”
Mouchet knows plenty of people will think turning down WWE is insane, and she is not pretending otherwise. But she talked it over with her friends and family, and she is comfortable with the choice.
“I know some people will think it’s crazy to refuse a WWE contract. To be honest, it is, but it’s simply because it’s not something I dream of. I talked about it with my friends and family, and I’m okay with all of this. I’m grateful for this experience.”
So at the end of the day, WWE wanted her, but Mouchet chose powerlifting, school, and her own life over starting over in Orlando. That is a bold call, but at least she made it on her own terms.
