MJF was nowhere to be seen during AEW’s emotional tribute show for PAC for the September 30 edition of Dynamite, and it didn’t take long for fans to start asking why. With so many wrestlers paying their respects throughout the night, plenty expected one of the company’s biggest stars to at least make an appearance.
PWInsider’s Mike Johnson was asked exactly that during a recent Q&A, with one fan wondering why MJF wasn’t part of the show. Johnson didn’t think there was anything unusual about it. In his view, bringing MJF back just to appear on the tribute show wouldn’t have fit the character AEW has spent years building.
“Let’s be honest – that would be very ‘out of character’ for the MJF that is portrayed on AEW programming. Plus, he’s been off TV of late, so it makes the most sense to bring him back when they are ready for his next story.”
Johnson also pointed to Bryan Danielson’s appearance, saying someone like Danielson naturally fit the tone of the show. MJF, on the other hand, is a completely different story.
“Bryan Danielson wrestling and appearing makes sense as a way to help the audience feel uplifted in the wake of tragedy and to pay tribute to Pac. MJF, who is supposed to be the most rotten, obnoxious jerk in the history of pro wrestling… to me, doesn’t make the same sort of sense.”
MJF has been off AEW television since All In, and he’s already said he’s waiting for the right moment to make his return. Bottom line: AEW simply stuck to that plan instead of bringing him back for a one-off appearance during one of the company’s most emotional shows.
