The person who finally convinced Vince McMahon to walk away from TKO has now been revealed, and it was someone very close to home. According to details discussed from Ari Emanuel’s new book, Stephanie McMahon was the one who talked her father into resigning when the pressure around WWE’s former chairman reached a breaking point.
Dave Meltzer broke down the revelation during Wrestling Observer Radio while discussing Emanuel’s account of what happened behind the scenes following Janel Grant’s lawsuit. Meltzer said Stephanie’s involvement had been known privately, but Emanuel’s book put the detail out there publicly for the first time. Meltzer explained that the book finally confirmed who got through to Vince when his position inside TKO became impossible to hold onto.
“Okay. Well, I mean, it was. It was interesting how he framed the whole deal. He did the one thing that. That he did do that. I mean, we all knew it, but he. He actually said it was that, you know, when Vince resigned. That the person who talked him into resigning was in fact Stephanie, which we all knew, but it had never been said publicly.”
That puts Stephanie right in the middle of one of the biggest turning points in WWE history. Vince had already sold WWE into the Endeavor deal that created TKO, but he still remained Executive Chairman until everything exploded in January 2024. Things were getting ugly fast behind the scenes too. Meltzer said TKO President and COO Mark Shapiro had already made up his mind once Grant’s lawsuit became public.
“So that was one thing. And, you know, talked about the, the negotiations and everything like that. He said that when the Grant lawsuit came out, Shapiro, Mark Shapiro was the one who said, he’s got to be gone.”
The problem was that getting Vince out wasn’t as simple as somebody handing him a pink slip. Meltzer said the structure of the TKO deal meant McMahon could not simply be fired, leaving resignation as the only path to removing him.
“You know, Arie wasn’t as. I mean, he had to be gone. I mean, you know, once the sponsor, once Slim Jim’s pulled out, there was no doubt, you know, I mean, the way the deal was made, they could not fire him. They had. No, no, they could not fire him. The only way he could go was for Vince to resign. So they basically had to force him to resign.”

Sponsor pressure also made the situation much harder to survive. “And Shapiro just was like, he’s got to be out. I think Ari waited until Slim Jims happened, and with the Slim Jim’s thing, it’s like, look, the company’s gonna have a sponsor revolt if you don’t resign. You’re gonna have to resign.”

Vince McMahon ultimately resigned from TKO on January 26, 2024, one day after Grant filed her lawsuit against McMahon, WWE and John Laurinaitis. McMahon denied wrongdoing, and the federal case was later officially closed in July 2026 after the parties agreed to dismiss the action with prejudice while preserving claims and defenses for private arbitration.
Vince McMahon spent decades being the guy nobody seemed capable of pushing out of WWE, but this time the final conversation apparently came from inside his own family.
