Paul Heyman has no problem playing one of WWE’s most confident personalities, but he doesn’t want fans getting too familiar with the real person behind the character. In fact, Heyman admits he’s uncomfortable being himself in public because it means letting people see his flaws.
While speaking with Graham Bensinger, Heyman was asked about his reluctance to show his true personality outside WWE. He didn’t try to deny it. Instead, he explained that being himself means exposing parts of his life he’d rather keep private.
“It’s vulnerable. It’s flaws and all. It’s just me and I’m very private.”
Bensinger then wanted to know what exactly Heyman was worried people might discover. But according to Heyman, there isn’t some huge secret he’s desperately trying to hide. He just knows he’s got personal issues like everybody else.
“It’s not a concern. I’m just a terribly fu*ked up person like everybody else. I just embrace my f*cked-up-ed-ness.”
Heyman then made it clear he isn’t interested in pretending he’s perfect just because he’s a major WWE personality. He believes everybody has their own problems, and he’s perfectly comfortable acknowledging his.
“I’m special. I’m different. I’m f*cked up. You’re f*cked up in your way. He’s f*cked up in his way. She’s f*cked up in her way. All respect to everybody in the room. And I embrace it.”
That’s a pretty different attitude from what fans usually see on WWE television. Heyman can stand in front of thousands of people and deliver a promo without blinking, but apparently, letting those same people see who he really is makes him uncomfortable. And he doesn’t seem interested in changing that arrangement. He can be the Wise Man when the cameras are rolling and keep the rest of his life to himself.
For Heyman, there’s a clear difference between entertaining WWE fans and inviting them into his private world. He’s happy to give them the character they’ve followed for decades, but the real Paul Heyman isn’t necessarily part of the deal.
Do you think Paul Heyman should be more comfortable showing his real personality, or is he right to keep his private life away from WWE fans? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
