Paul Heyman is still going to bat for Brock Lesnar, and this time he made it clear that fans have never fully appreciated just how good Lesnar really is inside the ring.
While speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Heyman was asked about Brock’s career and their legendary partnership. Heyman praised Lesnar as a one-of-one athlete, but he didn’t stop there. He said Brock is also the most underrated in-ring worker he has ever watched. Heyman said Brock would have been fine without him because Lesnar is simply that special. Then Heyman dropped the line that says it all.
“Would he have been fine without Paul Heyman? Absolutely. Brock Lesnar is the modern-day Jim Thorpe. He’s the greatest athlete on the face of the planet. There’s no one like Brock Lesnar.”
“And he is the most underappreciated, underrated in-ring worker I have ever seen in my life.”
Heyman also talked about the early days of Lesnar coming into WWE. According to him, there were people who wanted Brock to just stand there in the ring and let everyone bounce off him, but Heyman saw that as a disaster waiting to happen.
“Just stand in the middle of the ring, kid. You’ll be fine. Let everybody bounce off of you. Don’t move too much. He should be a Russian.”
Heyman said that made no sense because Brock had freakish athletic ability for someone his size. He also said Taz was the one who brought Brock to him because Taz knew WWE could mess up the presentation.
“He’s an NCAA Division 1 heavyweight champion. Look at his combine numbers. Look at what he can do. Look at his leaping ability. Look at the way that he moves. Have you ever seen anyone move like that? Let alone someone of that size move like that.”
“Taz brought him over to me cuz Taz was such a huge fan of Brock’s amateur career and Taz said, ‘Hey brother, they’re going to screw this up. You got to get involved in this over here.’”
Heyman then went to Vince McMahon and pushed for WWE to protect Brock’s presentation. The result was a simple formula that made Brock feel different from everybody else.
“So I went to Vince and I said, ‘Hey, we have a heavy investment in Brock Lesnar. We’re going to screw this up.’”
“So I started producing his matches and we just went by the theory of simple, spotlighted, singular. If we just kept his matches to that, it would resonate. It would translate to the audience.”
Heyman’s point was clear. Brock Lesnar was never just a big guy with a scary look. He was an elite athlete, a powerful performer, and, in Heyman’s eyes, someone whose in-ring work still does not get enough respect.
