Baron Corbin kept the United States Championship on SmackDown this week, but a lot of WWE fans immediately wished he hadn’t.
Corbin cheated his way past Trick Williams on the August 7 edition of SmackDown, but the finish wasn’t what had people fired up. Instead, social media filled with fans questioning why WWE doubled down on Corbin’s title reign at all. One fan didn’t mince words, questioning why WWE continues pushing Corbin after all these years.
“So Corbin isn’t over. And wasn’t for most of his career. So what’s the reasoning on this one?”
Another fan was so shocked by the result that they joked WWE shouldn’t have even posted the graphic announcing Corbin’s victory.
“This graphic should be illegal to post. Like it gotta be harassment of some kind. Like come on dawg… we in 2026 talkin’ bout some Baron Corbin END OF DAYS! Lookin’ ah.”
Others weren’t upset that Corbin cheated—they were upset because they felt WWE’s booking made its own champion look weak.
“If u wanna make Baron a dominant heel force of nature u can’t make him use the belt to hit Trick every match to win. Makes him look weak asl.”
Another frustrated viewer looked past Corbin altogether and instead hoped Trick Williams would move on to something bigger.
“Holy f this company is doomed. Hopefully Trick will go on to win Money in the Bank.”
One final reaction summed up just how unhappy some fans were with WWE’s decision to keep the title on Corbin.
“Let’s have a bald headed guy who has no star appeal, looks homeless, and looks terminally ill, as our champion. OK.”
The backlash came after Corbin survived Trick Williams by using the United States Championship as a weapon behind the referee’s back. Williams looked ready to regain the title more than once, but Corbin escaped, grabbed the championship a second time and blasted Williams before stealing the pinfall.
Whether fans like it or not, Corbin isn’t done with the title just yet. WWE has already announced that he’ll defend the United States Championship again next week on SmackDown, this time against Carmelo Hayes. After the reaction to Friday night’s finish, Hayes may have a lot more people in his corner than WWE expected.
