Paige and Brie Bella’s WWE Women’s Tag Team Title defense was apparently supposed to happen on a much bigger stage.
The champions are now set to defend the titles against Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid of Fatal Influence this Saturday at Saturday Night’s Main Event inside Madison Square Garden, but according to a new report, that wasn’t WWE’s original plan.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the match was initially scheduled for SummerSlam before WWE moved it to Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18th.
“Paige & Brie Bella defend the women’s tag titles against Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The tag title match as noted was originally on the SummerSlam card.”
Paige and Brie also head into the defense with plenty of momentum. Since winning the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships, they’ve already retained the titles four times, picking up victories over The Irresistible Forces on two occasions, as well as Bayley & Lyra Valkyria and Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez.
Now, instead of waiting until SummerSlam, WWE has decided to pull the trigger a few weeks earlier. Whether that means WWE has bigger plans for the women’s division at SummerSlam—or simply wanted to strengthen Saturday Night’s Main Event—remains to be seen. Either way, one of the company’s championship matches has officially been moved off one of the biggest shows of the year and onto this weekend’s card at Madison Square Garden.
