Brock Lesnar’s road to SummerSlam was apparently supposed to look very different.
Instead of gearing up for a third blockbuster match with Oba Femi inside Hell in a Cell, a new backstage report claims Lesnar was originally penciled in for an entirely different opponent before WWE reshuffled its creative plans.
Speaking during a Self Made Session, Self Made Pro revealed that WWE’s original direction called for Lesnar and GUNTHER to collide at SummerSlam, while GUNTHER was also expected to work Roman Reigns earlier in the year. Somewhere along the way, those plans changed—and according to the report, that decision had a ripple effect on multiple top storylines.
“GUNTHER was supposed to face Brock at SummerSlam, and GUNTHER was supposed to face Roman in the late spring/early summer. For whatever reason, that got changed, so that switched up a lot of creative.”
With Lesnar now heading into a Hell in a Cell match against Oba Femi, some fans assumed Brock may have pushed to continue that rivalry. Self Made Pro says that wasn’t the case at all.
“Like I said, GUNTHER was gonna work Roman and Brock. I don’t think it was a case of Brock saying, ‘Give me two more Oba matches.’ That’s not what happened.”
In fact, he went a step further and said this version of Brock Lesnar has been the easiest to work with creatively in years.
“This period right now has been the least creatively picky that Brock Lesnar has ever been.”
The report offers a very different look at how WWE arrived at its current SummerSlam card. Lesnar and Oba Femi have spent months tearing into each other, with the rivalry stretching from WrestleMania 42 to Clash in Italy before culminating in their upcoming Hell in a Cell match. But if this report is accurate, none of that was originally the plan. Instead, WWE pivoted away from a completely different creative direction involving Lesnar, GUNTHER and Roman Reigns.
Now, with SummerSlam only weeks away, fans are getting what could end up being one of the biggest matches of the year. But behind the scenes, it sounds like WWE nearly went in a completely different direction.
