Nikki Bella is opening up about why things really ended with John Cena, and she says it came down to one major life decision.
During a recent meet and greet, Nikki Bella was asked about her breakup with Cena. She explained that the biggest issue was having children, even though Cena eventually seemed willing to give her that future.
“It really was, at the end of the day, the kid thing. Even though he wanted… he was going to end up giving me that in the end, but I knew it wasn’t what he wanted.”
Nikki Bella said the split was not about a lack of love. Instead, she described it as two people who cared deeply about each other but wanted different lives.
“It was just two people who really loved each other but were living such different lives.”
She then explained why staying together would have been painful in the long run. In her view, forcing one person to sacrifice the life they truly wanted would have created a sad future for both of them.
“And it was kind of like—I think broken hearts heal, but you know, two people living lives that they don’t want to live and sacrificing one for the other—that will be a lonely, you know, sad life.”
Cena and Bella were together from 2012 to 2018, and their relationship became one of WWE’s most public romances. Cena proposed to her at WrestleMania 33 after their match against The Miz and Maryse, but they split the following year.
Bella previously said things are now comfortable backstage between her and Cena, adding that she has respect for him, his wife, and their relationship. For now, Nikki Bella is making it clear that the breakup was painful, but necessary. She loved Cena, but she knew their futures were moving in different directions.
