Nikki Bella has plenty of stories from growing up with Brie, but this one could’ve ended a whole lot differently. While looking back on the things they used to do for each other, Nikki recalled the day she almost got hit on a California freeway because Brie forgot one very important detail before borrowing their shared car.
Speaking on The Nikki & Brie Show, the twins were talking about driving each other to the airport when Nikki remembered taking Brie to catch a flight when they were both 19 years old. At the time, they shared one car, and Nikki said Brie told her she’d already filled the gas tank.
“So I’m taking Brie to the airport. Brie said she filled up the car… We shared a car. She said she filled up the tank. So why would I even look at the tank? She trusted me. I trusted her.”
Nikki got Brie to the airport without any issues, but things went downhill almost immediately after she started driving home.
“So I dropped Brie off at the airport. We were 19… and this bitch, I get her to the airport, then I’m driving on the five freeway… I was on the eight… I’m in the fast lane and my car just stops, and it’s like at a point where I’m like about to get slammed.”
At the time, Nikki had no idea the car had simply run out of gas. A police officer arrived to help, but because of where the car had stopped, he couldn’t even get out of his cruiser. Instead, he started giving her instructions over the loudspeaker.
“So then a cop comes up who’s angry at me already for being in the fast lane, stopped. Like, I’m gonna talk like Mateo, that’s… I wish I knew that word then, bro. Like I decided to stop here and put my life at risk. He can’t get out of the car because of right where we’re at on the freeway. So he is trying to talk to me through, by the way, the microphone… So I hear, like, ‘Put your car in neutral.’ And I was like, so I’m like, I don’t even know, but sure, I’ll put it in neutral.”
And I see him, like, reverse back and I’m like, ‘What’s he doing?’ And he comes, like, full pedal at me and I’m like, ‘This cop f****** loses his mind.’ And he bumps me. The officer was actually pushing Nikki’s car out of the fast lane, and she said police had to stop traffic to get her safely toward an exit. They had to stop the whole freeway for me. You guys imagine… it’s standstill traffic to get me off the freeway.”
Unfortunately, Nikki thought putting the car in neutral meant her brakes no longer worked, so the situation only got worse once she reached the exit. Instead of pressing the brake pedal, Nikki grabbed the emergency brake.
“So I didn’t know that when your car’s in neutral and even though the ignition’s on, I just at that age didn’t think the brakes worked. So I wasn’t… I would’ve done the same. I would’ve just fucking went off. I look like I was driving a go-kart. I was like, ‘What am I doing?’ And I’m, like, hitting the bumps and they’re screaming at me to hit the brake because I’m literally about to go through an intersection at this point. So then what do I do? I grab the emergency brake and I hit it and almost flipped my car. I thought I was done.”
Once everything finally came to a stop, the officer figured out what had caused the whole mess. Nikki immediately explained why she never checked the fuel gauge.
“He comes out… he’s screaming at me and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, sir. Like, this was very traumatizing for me.’
And he looks out, he goes, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re outta gas.’ And I was like, ‘I am?’ He just was screaming at me at that point. I didn’t even know what he’s saying. I felt like I was, like, gonna go time out and get grounded. I was just like, ‘Oh my God. I didn’t know. My sister said she filled up the tank.’ And obviously he’s like, ‘You didn’t look?’ And I was like, ‘No, I didn’t look.’”
The officer eventually told Nikki she’d have to arrange for gas herself, which wasn’t exactly ideal considering how broke they were at the time. Nikki said the whole ordeal lasted hours, and by then she was more than ready to have a few words with her sister.
“He goes, ‘I’m not dealing with this situation anymore. You have to call…’ What’d he say? A tow truck. You have to get gas. And I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ And Nicole and I were, like, living penny… and it was raining on top of it. Anyways, it was a whole f****** day thing. But then I had to wait for a tow truck to bring me gas, and all I wanted to do was just kill Brie. I was like, ‘I can’t believe I had to go through all of this because of you.’”
Then came the detail that made the story even funnier. While Nikki was stuck dealing with police, traffic and a tow truck, Brie had flown off to see a guy.
“By the way, you guys, she took me to the airport so I could go, like, fly and see a guy.”
Nikki didn’t waste any time responding: “Yeah. I mean, what a b****.” Brie laughed and admitted exactly why Nikki had gone through all that trouble: “So her sister can get laid.” Despite everything, Nikki brought the conversation back to the original topic of doing favors for people you love.
“But anyways, at the end of the day, everyone, I didn’t feel obligated. Probably every time after that I did.”
Nikki’s terrifying freeway experience eventually became one of those stories the twins can laugh about years later, even if it definitely wasn’t funny at the time. What started as a simple favor for her sister turned into a police escort, a stranded car, and one very expensive lesson about always checking the fuel gauge for yourself—no matter who tells you they filled the tank.
