Nigel McGuinness isn’t letting a busted-up foot knock him out of the Continental Challenge Cup.
McGuinness showed up Monday wearing a walking boot on his left foot after suffering an injury during his August 15 AEW Collision match against Katsuyori Shibata. The good news is there’s no break or fracture, and Nigel made it clear he’s staying in the tournament.
That’s a big turnaround from Collision, when Tony Schiavone said AEW only knew that McGuinness had suffered an injury and couldn’t offer much more. Nigel had already beaten Shibata to advance, but his entire tournament run suddenly looked like it could be over. Not anymore.
McGuinness explained that he knows his career is winding down and this may be his only shot at competing in the Continental Challenge Cup. With a possible trip to the finals at Wembley Stadium waiting at the end, he wasn’t about to surrender his spot because of the foot injury. That means Nigel will move forward and face Hechicero in the quarterfinals.
His schedule isn’t getting any easier either. McGuinness is also set to challenge Lee Moriarty for the ROH Pure Championship on Friday at ROH Death Before Dishonor before continuing his Continental Challenge Cup run.
So while Nigel is walking around in a boot, he isn’t shutting anything down. No fracture, no withdrawal and no giving up his shot at Wembley.
