Nick Aldis finally got his WWE match at SummerSlam 2026, but according to Mickie James, he had already accepted that it might never happen. Long before stepping into the ring with GUNTHER, Aldis had apparently come to terms with the idea that WWE simply didn’t hire him to wrestle.
While speaking to Ben Veal, James was asked about the long road she and Aldis had traveled together and what it was like finally seeing him wrestle inside a WWE ring. She revealed that Aldis had essentially let go of that possibility after settling into his role with the company.
“Yeah. And, well, he had kind of just given up on that option of, like, it’s okay.
And completely—and not in a way that was, like, you know, it’s hard, you know—but very satisfied in the role and what he’s been doing and what he does on television and also behind the scenes because he just loves wrestling so much and he’s very smart, very good at it, you know.”
Aldis joined WWE in 2023 and eventually became SmackDown General Manager, but an actual WWE wrestling run never followed. James said he eventually reached the conclusion that there was a pretty simple reason for that: WWE hadn’t brought him in to be a wrestler.
“But I think that he had just kind of come to the conclusion, like, that’s not what—they didn’t hire him to be a wrestler. They didn’t want, you know, that’s—this is who he is, and he was okay.”
And he’s really done such a fabulous job as the general manager.”
That didn’t mean Aldis was sitting backstage unhappy about it. James said he genuinely embraced being SmackDown General Manager while also becoming heavily involved behind the scenes. His work producing and looking at the bigger picture creatively gave him another way to contribute to wrestling even without actually getting in the ring.
“I think he’s doing a fantastic job, and I think even behind the scenes, a lot of the stuff that he does and, like, the producing and stuff like that, like, he’s so good at that, you know.
And he’s so passionate about it, and he wants everything. He sees, like, the big picture of a lot of things.”
There was still one little problem: Aldis is a wrestler. James admitted that even after he accepted his WWE role for what it was, that desire to actually wrestle for the company never completely disappeared. He just stopped expecting the opportunity to come.
“So he was totally complacent. But always that—there’s that little urge inside of you if that was to, you know, the dream was to actually happen.”
Then it happened anyway. Aldis finally returned to the ring against GUNTHER at SummerSlam, turning something he had apparently stopped waiting for into one of the biggest moments of his WWE run. For James, there was something fitting about the opportunity arriving only after Aldis had made peace with potentially never getting it.
“And it’s amazing how when you kind of, like, let it go and you’re—and then it kind of comes to you in a magical way, right? Like, it’s just like you couldn’t have written it any better.”
The SummerSlam match may have changed WWE’s thinking as well. We had previously reported that Aldis surpassed expectations against GUNTHER and that there are people backstage who want to see him have a significant in-ring run, although another match may not happen until 2027.
Aldis had apparently reached the point where he was perfectly happy helping WWE from behind the desk and behind the scenes. One SummerSlam match later, the wrestling career he had stopped expecting could suddenly have a lot more life left in it.
