MJF apparently has no interest in being dragged into another WWE comparison over something he didn’t even make. After a fake piece of “OTC” merchandise started circulating online and had fans accusing AEW of blatantly copying Roman Reigns, MJF stepped in and shut the whole thing down himself.
During the August 12 edition of AEW Dynamite, MJF began referring to himself as the “One True Champion.” It didn’t take long for someone online to shorten that to “OTC”—which happens to be the exact moniker Roman Reigns has been using as the “Original Tribal Chief.”
Then things got considerably more ridiculous. A fan-created image began circulating that appeared to show MJF merchandise branded with “OTC.” The design looked similar enough to Reigns’ branding that some fans apparently believed AEW was legitimately selling it.
That immediately created another round of accusations that MJF and AEW were borrowing from WWE. Except the merchandise wasn’t real. Once the image reached MJF, he took to Twitter and killed the story with two sentences.
“Literally fake. F*** off.”
So whatever people want to make of MJF calling himself the “One True Champion,” the Roman Reigns-style merchandise wasn’t AEW trying to sneak something past anyone. It was a fan-made image that spread far enough for MJF himself to have to debunk it.
The confusion comes at an interesting time because MJF has already spent the past week dealing with comparisons to another former AEW World Champion.
After returning at Dynamite: Grand Slam Mexico, MJF attacked Andrade El Ídolo, dismissed Kenny Omega’s AEW World Championship as a “paper championship” and declared himself the company’s real champion.
Fans immediately compared the angle to CM Punk’s 2023 “Real World Championship” storyline, with some accusing AEW of recycling the idea. Now MJF’s “One True Champion” name has somehow brought Roman Reigns into the conversation too.
The Punk comparisons are fair game for fans to debate considering what MJF is actually doing on television. But anyone using that supposed “OTC” shirt as proof that AEW is copying Roman Reigns can cross that one off the list. The merchandise is fake—and MJF made sure everyone knew it.
