Michael Hayes has found himself in plenty of Chelsea Green drama lately, but apparently he’s also responsible for giving her some pretty important advice. The WWE Hall of Famer revealed that he once pulled Green up over something that was missing from one of her matches — Chelsea Green herself.
Speaking with Stephanie McMahon on What’s Your Story?, Hayes explained that one thing he constantly pushes with younger wrestlers is making sure their personalities don’t disappear once the bell rings. Putting together a technically good match is fine, but Hayes wants to actually see the character too.
“But, you know, I think pretty much they just told you who went over and, you know, not the details. Right? And are you bringing your character into a match? You know, that’s a theme I go with a lot with kids today. Like, I’ll hear how they’ll run the match. That’s a good match. Where’s your character?”
That’s when Hayes brought up Green, and even he seemed to realize that mentioning her name might be dangerous territory these days.
“You know, like I did that with Chelsea one time. I always get in trouble when I talk about—”
Stephanie immediately knew where this was going. Considering everything that’s happened between Hayes and Green lately, she couldn’t believe he was willingly stepping back into it.
“I know Chelsea. I’m surprised you just brought her up.”
Hayes wasn’t about to bury Green this time. Stephanie pointed out that Chelsea is great with her character, and Hayes completely agreed before revealing what he’d actually told her.
“She’s fantastic. Yes. But I told her, I said, ‘Chelsea, where was your character?’ I said, ‘I’m not telling you, you can’t wrestle and do good moves.’ Everybody can’t be Chelsea.”
Apparently, Chelsea didn’t argue or need the point explained five different ways. Hayes said she immediately understood what he was getting at and gave her plenty of credit for picking it up so quickly.
“And she got it right away. She’s very smart. She’s very smart.”
Of course, Hayes talking about Chelsea Green is always going to get a little more attention after their WWE Unreal drama. Green wasn’t happy when she first saw footage of Hayes questioning her potential, although she eventually changed her tune and credited his criticism with pushing her to another level.
Chelsea may have gotten over it, but her mother definitely had something to say. At SummerSlam, Green’s mom walked right up to Hayes, introduced herself and hit him with a simple “F*** you” over what she’d seen on Unreal, leaving Hayes with a story he immediately went backstage and told everyone.
This time, though, Hayes had nothing but praise for Green. His problem wasn’t that she couldn’t wrestle — he just wanted more Chelsea Green in a Chelsea Green match, and apparently she understood exactly what he meant.
