The WWE Tag Team Championship changed hands on the August 14 episode of SmackDown, with Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga of the MFTs walking out of Boston’s TD Garden with the gold.
The title change came in a three-way match against champions Damian Priest and R-Truth and the War Raiders. The MFTs had already made their intentions clear after attacking both teams following a recent title match, and this time they finished the job by winning the championships.
The victory gives Talla Tonga his first title in WWE, while Tama Tonga is now a three-time WWE Tag Team Champion. Tama previously held tag team gold with Jacob Fatu in 2024 and Solo Sikoa last year.
The win also comes just two weeks after Haku returned to WWE television in a vignette alongside his sons. That return immediately added more weight to the MFTs’ push, and now the family has championship gold to show for it. Priest and R-Truth had held the titles since defeating the MFTs back in March ahead of WrestleMania 41, but their run officially came to an end in Boston.
This is a major shift for the SmackDown tag team division, which has gone through a lot of changes over the past year. With the MFTs now on top, WWE has a fresh title direction and another reason to keep the group front and center moving forward.
For now, Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga are the new WWE Tag Team Champions, and the MFTs just put themselves back at the top of SmackDown’s tag team scene.
