Maya World just pulled off a huge upset on AEW Collision.
During the June 20 episode, Maya World defeated Athena to advance to the finals of the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament. The announcers pushed the win as a major shock, and for good reason, because Athena was seen as one of the toughest names left in the field. That victory now locks in Maya World vs. Mercedes Moné at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.
Mercedes already earned her spot in the finals on Dynamite after defeating STARDOM’s Hazuki. Hazuki gave her a fight, but Moné survived the semifinal and punched her ticket to Forbidden Door.
Maya had the tougher mountain on Collision, and she climbed it. Taking out Athena puts her in the biggest match of her AEW run so far, and now she has a shot to win the entire Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament.
Things got even messier after the bell. Mercedes Moné and Athena attacked Maya World after the match, making it clear the drama is already rolling before Forbidden Door.
Now the finals are set. Mercedes Moné has the star power, but Maya World just shocked Athena and walked out with serious momentum.
