Matt Riddle isn’t holding back when it comes to wrestling partnerships, as he just accused NXT and AEW of mooching talent from TNA and NJPW, respectively.
While speaking to TV Insider, Riddle called out NXT’s relationship with TNA and AEW’s ties to NJPW, saying both situations feel too one-sided when it comes to talent movement. Riddle said NXT and AEW have benefited heavily from other promotions’ stars.
“Then you have AEW and TNA. You have TNA and NXT, NXT just kind of mooches their talent kind of like AEW mooches New Japan’s talent, etc. I don’t think that’s fair.”
The former WWE Superstar added that partnerships in professional wrestling need more balance instead of one company gaining more from the relationship than the other. He then explained why he prefers staying flexible instead of locking himself into a regular contract.
“I feel there needs to be more give and take. People go where the money or opportunity is. That’s why I don’t like signing regular contracts. I’ve wrestled everywhere. I’ve been everywhere. I like where I’m at right now as a virtual free agent and in demand. If you’re still building your reputation, then it’s a little different.”
Riddle’s comments come as AEW and NJPW’s partnership has faced criticism from those who believe AEW has benefited more by bringing in major names like Kazuchika Okada, Jay White, and Will Ospreay. NXT’s working relationship with TNA has also led to similar criticism after names like Jordynne Grace and Joe Hendry signed with WWE.
For Riddle, the issue is simple: companies can work together, but the relationship should not feel like one side is just taking talent from the other. As someone currently working as a free agent, he clearly sees value in keeping options open instead of being tied down.
