Matt Cardona knows saying he’s glad Chelsea Green got hurt sounds pretty terrible. But after watching his wife turn that injury into one of the most emotional promos of her WWE run, Cardona believes it gave Green the chance to show everyone something they hadn’t seen from her before.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Cardona addressed Green’s broken orbital bone and the uncertainty now hanging over her WWE Women’s Championship reign. His first reaction wasn’t exactly what anyone would expect from her husband.
“Oh yeah. First, I mean, Chelsea Green finally becoming the women’s champion. And I told her this. I said, ‘I’m actually glad you got hurt.’”
Cardona wasn’t celebrating Green breaking her eye socket. He was talking about what happened afterwards. During the August 14 episode of SmackDown, Nick Aldis asked Green to surrender the WWE Women’s Championship because she wasn’t medically cleared to compete. Green pleaded to keep the title and delivered an emotional promo about everything she had sacrificed to finally become champion.
Aldis eventually gave her 30 days to get cleared instead. Cardona believes that segment allowed Green to show WWE fans she can deliver considerably more than the comedy-heavy character work that has defined much of her run.
“’Cause you were able to cut that heartfelt promo, which I think makes her a made woman right now in WWE.”
For Cardona, that was the part that mattered. Green’s ability to entertain people was already established. The injury unexpectedly gave her an opportunity to show another side of herself.
“I think everyone knows how entertaining she is, but she’s so much more than that. And I think that promo on Friday really cemented that.”
Cardona also made it clear that he’s taking anything involving his wife personally right now. While discussing Gunther during the same conversation, he said the two had never had any real issue before—but disrespecting Green immediately changes that.
“And as for Gunther, I had no problem with that guy. You know, I have no relationship with him. We say hi and bye at work. That’s about it. But if you disrespect my wife, then I have a problem.”
Green still has the much bigger problem ahead of her. She has 30 days to get medically cleared or risk losing the WWE Women’s Championship.
But Cardona believes something important already came out of the injury. Green got the chance to drop the comedy, fight for the championship she had worked to win and show a different side of herself on television. According to Cardona, that was enough to make Chelsea Green a “made woman” in WWE.
