Mason Rook is taking his last-minute removal from the September 29 WWE NXT card hard. After WWE announced that he was not medically cleared to challenge Grayson Waller for the NXT Championship, Rook issued an emotional message making it clear that missing the biggest opportunity of his NXT run was completely out of his hands.
WWE announced the major change ahead of the September 29 episode, confirming that Rook could not compete as scheduled. He had earned the championship opportunity by winning a Triple Threat match and was supposed to go one-on-one with Waller for the title. Shortly after the announcement, Rook took to Twitter/X and apologized to fans while admitting how badly he wanted to wrestle.
“I’m sorry. Sometimes life is cruel. Every fibre of my being wanted to compete tonight but unfortunately it is out of my control.”
Rook didn’t make the message sound like some long-term setback either. He ended his statement by promising that whatever is keeping him out tonight isn’t going to derail his momentum.
“I promise this is just a speed bump and not a road block.”
That’s about as direct as Rook could be without revealing exactly what medical issue stopped him from being cleared. WWE has not announced any additional details about his condition or given a timetable for when he could return to action.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Rook. This was set to be his first NXT Championship opportunity after weeks of building toward Grayson Waller, including a heated face-to-face where the two took personal shots at each other before their title match was made official.
Waller is still scheduled to defend the NXT Championship tonight, so WWE isn’t scrapping the title match completely. The company has not revealed who will replace Rook, leaving a mystery challenger hanging over the top of the show.
Rook clearly wanted this one badly, but his message makes it sound like he already has his eyes on getting back rather than dwelling on the opportunity that disappeared. For now, the title shot is gone, but Rook is making it clear he doesn’t see this as the end of his chase.
