Celebrity appearances in WWE have increased in recent years, and according to TKO president Mark Shapiro, that trend isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
While speaking to students during a Q&A session, Shapiro responded to fan complaints about the growing number of celebrity crossovers, including appearances from Logan Paul, Pat McAfee, Jelly Roll, and others. Some fans have questioned whether these appearances are taking attention away from full-time wrestlers. Shapiro pushed back on that criticism and explained that celebrity involvement isn’t new to WWE — it’s simply happening on a much larger scale now.
“Having Hollywood tie-ins and celebs and stars and Logan Paul and Pat McAfee and Mark Wahlberg does shows up and does his thing or Tyrese Halliburton last year got in a fight in the ring… that's not new. It's just on a larger stage and we're spending a lot more money to market the brand and market the content.”
He also pointed to WWE’s history of mainstream crossover success, referencing major names who transitioned between wrestling and Hollywood over the years.
“The Rock is the biggest star on the planet, right? I mean he actually is… He was a wrestler for WWE for years before he ever became a Jumanji star.”
From Shapiro’s perspective, celebrity involvement isn’t a distraction — it’s part of WWE’s long-standing formula for attracting attention beyond the traditional wrestling audience. With stars from sports, music, and Hollywood continuing to appear inside WWE rings, the strategy appears to be built around expanding the brand’s reach rather than narrowing its focus.
