The August 7 edition of WWE SmackDown brought all the fallout after SummerSlam to Philadelphia. There was a lot to unpack from the top to the bottom of the roster.
Randy Orton returned to WWE at SummerSlam to help CM Punk beat Cody Rhodes. The American Nightmare opened up this week’s show by calling our Randy Orton. The Viper didn’t come out, but CM Punk did, and he denied knowing Orton was going to interfere at SummerSlam. Then Rhodes left the ring.
On the other hand, Kevin Owens also returned at SummerSlam to make himself the #1 contender for CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship. They got to that next as Owens made his way out while Cody Rhodes left.
Kevin Owens got in the ring and stood in CM Punk’s face. They talked some trash as SmackDown GM Nick Aldis made his way down to the ring. Fans chanted “let them fight,” but then Owens told Aldis not to worry.
CM Punk asked Kevin Owens if he wants to wrestle, and Owens answered that he did, especially after being out of action for 17 months. He then brougth up how he is #1 contender, but for some reason he felt the need to tell Cody that he just needs to name a time and place for another title shot.
After that, CM Punk jumped into his promo about how he made it in pro wrestling and how he’s a draw. Then he said that people called him “Skinny Fat,” so “do you think they’re waiting for Kevin Owens?”
Kevin Owens brought up how it’s been 10 years since he was Universal Champion, but now the moment of winning the title again is even better. He also gets to humble CM Punk in the process. CM Punk said that it’s “good to have impossible dreams.” He said that Owens looks scared, and KO laughed. CM Punk said he doesn’t think he’s the best in the world, he knows he is the best in the world.
KO said that CM Punk must be so lonely on the pesdestal he puts himself on, but seeing Punk has made him determined that it won’t turn him into “a miserable piece of sh*t like you.” They got in each other’s faces after that and they needed to be pulled apart. This was quite a tense segment, but no match between the two was officially announced yet.
