Kendal Grey is heading into NXT Heatwave still dealing with the effects of that brutal Underground match with Lola Vice, and by her own admission, she isn’t anywhere close to 100%.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio on August 27, Grey revealed that she’s still experiencing ringing in her ear and problems with her balance more than three weeks after getting busted open during her NXT Women’s Championship defense.
“I definitely wouldn’t say I’m 100%. I still have ringing in the ear. I’m still not 100% balanced. We’re still doing a lot of rehab for it and doing a lot of stuff to get everything back to normal. It’s a slow process.”
That’s not exactly ideal when Grey is about to defend the NXT Women’s Championship against Kelani Jordan at Heatwave. Grey doesn’t seem particularly interested in waiting until everything is back to normal, though. As far as she’s concerned, keeping the title comes before completely recovering.
“I’m crazy. My #1 priority isn’t fully recovering, it’s defending this title. So I’ll do whatever it takes going into Heatwave. I will defend this no matter what.”
The injury happened during Grey’s August 4 NXT Underground match against Lola Vice. Grey went for a dive on Vice outside the ring, missed and crashed into the steel steps. Blood started pouring from her ear, and WWE’s medical staff quickly surrounded her.
Grey wasn’t having any of it. With Wren Sinclair alongside her, Grey eventually snapped, “I got it! I got it!” before wrapping her own head and getting right back into the fight. Sinclair slapped her to get her back into the fight, and Grey eventually caught Vice in an armbar to force the submission and retain the NXT Women’s Championship, handing Vice her first loss in NXT Underground competition.
More than three weeks later, though, Grey apparently hasn’t completely shaken off what happened. She’s still rehabbing, still dealing with ringing in her ear and still having balance issues—but none of that is stopping her from walking into Heatwave with the title. Whether fighting Kelani Jordan while admittedly less than 100% is a good idea is another question entirely. Grey has already made her priority pretty clear: the championship comes first.
Do you think Kendal Grey will be able to retain against Kelani Jordan while still dealing with these issues? Let us know in the comments.
