John Cena spent 23 years in WWE, but he says there was never a point where he was sitting backstage frustrated with management. He had a few brief moments of frustration like anyone else, but according to Cena, the stories about him having problems with the people running WWE simply aren’t true.
While speaking to WrestleRant, Cena was originally asked about Gunther’s career after defeating him in his final match and later retiring AJ Styles. Cena said he still keeps tabs on everyone, but used the question to make a bigger point about how wrestlers handle the opportunities they get.
“Man, I’m always watching everybody, and opportunity is just a way to get you another opportunity.”
Cena has watched plenty of wrestlers become frustrated when one big opportunity doesn’t immediately lead to another. He admitted he felt that way himself a handful of times, but those moments apparently disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived.
“I tell this story often because a common thread that I find with a lot of talent—can you tell I like an anecdote?—but a common thread that I find with a lot of talent is they get to a point of frustration.”
Everyone in the locker room at one point gets to a point of frustration. I got to be honest with you, over my 23 years, I might have had two or three moments of fleeting frustration. They were like the blink of an eye because I always loved what I did.”
Cena then used his WrestleMania career to show just how long he sometimes had to wait for another opportunity at the very top. After main-eventing back-to-back WrestleManias against The Rock, he didn’t get another WrestleMania main event until his final one in 2025.
“For me to tell the story of, like, ‘Hey man, I main evented back-to-back WrestleMania against The Rock in the two most successful events at that time in company history,’ and then the next time I main evented WrestleMania was my last one in 2025. So it took me 13 years to get back to the main event. You didn’t see me complain. Never heard.”
That’s also where Cena made a distinction between occasionally being frustrated and being frustrated with WWE management. He knows there have been plenty of reports about backstage drama over the years, but says that particular story was never true when it came to him.
“I know there’s a lot of reports and everybody talks about backstage drama and all that. There was never a John Cena frustrated with management because it’s just not true, not believable.”
Cena isn’t pretending he loved every single moment of a 23-year WWE career. He just never turned those brief frustrations into a fight with management, even when another WrestleMania main event took 13 years to come around.
