John Cena knows he struck gold with Peacemaker, and he’s not pretending that role is just another Hollywood paycheck.

During his SpaceCon San Antonio Q&A, Cena talked about fans telling him nobody else could play the DC character. That kind of compliment clearly means something to him, because Cena said he poured everything into that role. Cena said hearing that from fans hits him hard because he didn’t half-step the character.

“I heard so many people today say like, ‘Hey man, there’s no one else that can play Peacemaker.’”

“Yeah. AND I GOT TO TELL YOU that that warms my heart because if you’ve watched both of those seasons, you know I’ve invested my whole self into that character.”

Later in the Q&A, another fan asked Cena how cool it was to take Peacemaker from a lesser-known comic book name and help turn him into a bigger deal. Cena didn’t play humble on that one.

“On the level of cool, zero being the equator, 10 being the polar ice caps, Peacemakers 10.”

Cena also gave credit to James Gunn for helping build the character and made it clear he still has love for the crew.

“Yes. to be able to to create a character out of thin air, a virtual unknown and and work under the mentorship of a brilliant storyteller like James Gunn. It doesn’t get much better than that. And shout out to my Peacemaker crew. I miss my 11 Street kids. I hope we can get back together soon cuz I I love those guys. So, thank you.”

That’s why Peacemaker worked. Cena didn’t walk in like a wrestler doing a superhero bit. He committed to the weird, violent, damaged mess of that character and made people care about him.

Cena has had other movie roles, but Peacemaker is the one that feels like it belongs to him now. Once fans decide nobody else can touch a role, that’s when you know it landed.
