John Cena is not afraid of taking a big swing when WWE creative puts something in front of him.

During an ESPN interview on The Rich Eisen Show, Cena was asked about his heel turn and whether he wanted the old version of himself back after fans pushed against the change. Cena responded by explaining that he has always enjoyed fresh creative challenges, even when they come with risk. Cena said he rarely rejects WWE creative ideas and has spent his career trying to make whatever he is handed work as well as possible.

“I always like new creative challenges and that’s why I mean very rarely I honestly don’t think I’ve said no to any sort of creative decision in WWE. It’s always try — I’ve always tried to embrace it and do the best I can.”

Cena then tied that mindset to the final stretch of his WWE career, including the controversial moment where he tapped out with what he described as fulfillment on his face. He acknowledged that fans had mixed feelings about that as well, but said he still views those types of choices as part of the creative challenge.

“And right up until my final moment of, you know, tapping out with fulfillment on my face, which was, you know, very mixed reviews on that as well. I always enjoy a creative challenge and I’m not afraid to take those risks.”

That is a major statement from Cena, especially considering how many major creative turns he has gone through over more than two decades in WWE. From being the face of the company to taking on more experimental ideas late in his career, Cena made it clear that his default answer has usually been to accept the challenge rather than push back.

Cena’s comments also explain why he was willing to embrace a heel turn after so many years as WWE’s ultimate good guy. Even if the move split fans, Cena saw it as another creative risk worth taking.

Cena’s WWE legacy is already cemented, but his willingness to try ideas that could upset fans shows why the company trusted him for so long. He may not agree with every reaction, but he clearly believes the job is to commit fully once the creative direction is set.
