John Cena knows WWE’s Saudi Arabia shows aren’t everyone’s favorite topic, but he isn’t backing away from them. The 17-time World Champion says he understands why the company gets criticized, but he still believes in what WWE is trying to accomplish by holding events around the world.
Speaking to The Guardian, Cena was asked about his loyalty to WWE and how he deals with criticism aimed at the company. After touching on his 2021 Taiwan controversy, the conversation shifted to WWE’s Saudi Arabia partnership, where Cena has wrestled multiple times over the years.
Rather than getting into the political side of things, Cena explained that he sees WWE as something that can bring people together, no matter where they’re from.
“WWE offers a universal language of diplomacy.”
The interviewer also asked whether it’s difficult being part of a company that often finds itself under the microscope for some of its business decisions. Cena admitted it can be, especially because he genuinely believes in WWE.
“So, to your question of: ‘Hey, the thing that you’re in is sometimes criticised for the moves that it makes as an entity – is that difficult?’ Of course it is, especially when you believe in the entity.”
Cena’s comments come as WWE continues to deal with questions surrounding this year’s Crown Jewel event. While recent reports have suggested there’s growing concern backstage over the planned trip to Saudi Arabia, the Leader of Cenation made it clear that his own view of WWE holding events in the country hasn’t changed.
