Joe Hendry showed up at Citi Field Friday night, and the New York Mets wasted no time letting everyone know they believe.
The WWE star made an unannounced appearance during the Mets’ WWE Night on September 4, popping up around the ballpark in a Mets jersey and taking photos with fans. Hendry wasn’t advertised ahead of the game, making his arrival a legit surprise for people already inside Citi Field. Hendry also got some time on the stadium video board, where he appeared during the WWE-themed festivities as the Mets leaned all the way into pro wrestling for the night.
The Mets themselves got Hendry involved on social media after he linked up with Zac Thornton on the field. Thornton posed with a custom Mets championship belt while Hendry held up a personalized No. 49 “THORNTON” jersey. The team had one simple message:
“Zac Thornton believes in Joe Hendry 👏👏”
And Hendry wasn’t the only wrestling touch at Citi Field. Mr. Met and Mrs. Met were both decked out in pro wrestling-inspired gear as WWE branding and wrestling elements were worked throughout the game.
Hendry has become one of WWE’s most recognizable crossover personalities, and dropping him into a packed baseball stadium without warning is exactly the kind of appearance that plays right into his whole “say his name and he appears” gimmick.
WWE Night already had plenty of wrestling flavor, but Joe Hendry walking into Citi Field without being announced beforehand gave Mets fans one extra surprise they definitely weren’t expecting.
