Jim Ross is not worried about AEW’s crowded roster. If Sheamus becomes available, JR wants Tony Khan to make the move.
While speaking on Grilling JR, Ross reacted to reports that Sheamus could be leaving WWE and made it clear he sees plenty of value in bringing the veteran to AEW. He even has a role in mind already: put him back together with Claudio Castagnoli and let them strengthen the tag team division.
“Well, I think putting him back together with Cesaro is a good thing, if that happens. It’ll create a real strong team to make your tag team division stronger.”
Sheamus and Claudio spent years together in WWE as The Bar, turning a rivalry into one of the company’s most dependable teams. Ross clearly believes that chemistry could be picked right back up in AEW, especially with the division always looking for another heavyweight pairing that can walk in and feel important immediately.
But JR’s interest goes beyond a reunion act. He praised Sheamus as the kind of veteran every locker room can use: physical, reliable, easy to work with, and still capable of delivering when the bell rings.
“But he’s a hell of a good hand. He really is. He’s a good hand. He’s a good guy. I don’t know why you’d have any issues with bringing him back into the fold. He’s just a team player. He’s big and physical.”
That is a very different reaction from the concern coming from some people inside AEW. It was previously reported that people in AEW respected Sheamus personally but questioned whether the company needed another older former WWE name when so many wrestlers are already struggling to get television time.
Ross is looking at the other side of it. To him, Sheamus would not need to wrestle every week or take over the show to be useful. Even a limited deal would be enough if AEW picked the right matches and used him where he could make the biggest impact.
“So, I hope that he lands on his feet wherever he goes, but I’d like to personally, because I may be able to call some of his matches again someday, I hope that he signs with AEW on some sort of contract. Even if it’s a limited engagement contract where he’s not working every single time the lights come on, he’s there. I’m not for anybody having to do that.”
There is also a personal reason JR wants it to happen. He would like another chance to call Sheamus’ matches, and he clearly does not believe the veteran is anywhere close to finished: “So, I’m looking forward to seeing where he lands. He’s got lots of gas left in the tank. He’s smart.”
Nothing is official, and Ross admitted this is still one of those situations where everyone has to wait and see. But he is not sitting on the fence. If Sheamus leaves WWE, JR wants him in AEW, preferably standing next to Claudio and beating the hell out of teams all over again.
“So, we’ll have to wait and see, Conrad. This is one of those deals where you truly have to stay tuned to figure out what’s going to happen.”
AEW may already have more talent than television time, but Ross sees Sheamus as the kind of signing worth making room for. The only question is whether Tony Khan agrees.
