Jim Ross may have brain surgery ahead of him, but he’s already thinking about the next time he’ll be behind an AEW microphone.
While speaking on Grilling JR, the legendary broadcaster was asked when fans might hear him back on AEW commentary. Although Conrad Thompson suggested All In at Wembley Stadium on August 31 could be difficult depending on Ross’ recovery timeline, JR admitted that’s exactly where he’s hoping to make his return if everything goes according to plan.
“I hope so. I’d love to do that. I have my sights set on the UK and Wembley. It’s a big event and it’s a good trip. It’s a non-stop flight, and I enjoy that opportunity. So that’s kind of where I’m setting my sights. You know, I got that big two-day appearance coming up in Minneapolis very soon and that’s going to be fun. WrestleCon Minneapolis is a big deal. Some of the biggest stars in the business will be there, including The King and I. Good stuff, man.”
The comments are significant because they come after Ross confirmed he’ll undergo brain surgery after doctors discovered fluid pressing on his brain following a frightening collapse that resulted in an extended hospital stay. While his health remains the priority, it’s clear the Hall of Famer is already looking beyond the procedure and focusing on getting back to doing what he loves.
Ross also explained why he has no plans to step away from fan appearances as long as he’s physically able. Although he acknowledged he’s become much more careful about balancing his schedule with his recovery, he said meeting wrestling fans has become one of the biggest emotional boosts during an incredibly difficult period of his life.
“This is how you give back to your audience. I look forward to all those appearances—seeing people I haven’t seen in a long time or never before, meeting people for the first time. It’s a fun summer. Hopefully, if I don’t overbook myself and I take my time and spread these appearances out a little bit, we’re going to be doing good. That’s kind of where I am. I’m very respectful of my health and my time. I’m excited to be a part of all these type events. You know, Frankly, Conrad, I don’t know how many more of these I’ve got in me, but as long as I can do it and represent, I’m going to do it because it’s fun to do. These appearances are fun to do. They make me feel better. Psychologically, it’s just a win-win.”
Ross’ immediate focus remains on successfully getting through surgery and continuing his recovery, but his comments leave little doubt about one thing: if his health allows it, he wants his next major AEW broadcast to come from one of the company’s biggest stages at Wembley Stadium.
