Je’Von Evans’ WWE call-up didn’t just come out of nowhere—it happened just hours before Saturday Night’s Main Event, the same night as John Cena’s final match.
After Shawn Michaels recently admitted he fought to keep him in NXT longer, Evans has now shared his side of the story. Speaking on Nightcap, Evans revealed the exact moment he found out he was heading to the main roster—and it came just hours before John Cena’s final show. Evans explained that the news came completely out of nowhere while he was backstage, with no warning that his trajectory was about to change.
“Yeah. Yeah. It was like two hours before John Cena’s last show. I’m just chilling, and then Russo—or one of the writers, the main writer for NXT—he’s like, ‘Hey, Shawn wants to go talk to you.’ I’m like, ‘All right.’ Boom—I go to the office. I walk in, and it’s Triple H and Shawn Michaels. I’m like, ‘Damn, what’d I do?’”
What started as confusion quickly turned into a career-defining moment. Evans admitted he initially thought he might be in trouble—or even being told it was his last match in NXT.
“Shawn's like, ‘So this is your last match tonight.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, damn, all right.’ But I walk in, and Shawn’s like, ‘So, you know, NXT—it’s supposed to be your year, but unfortunately…’ and then Triple H jumps in, like, ‘Hey, we’re going to bring you up. You’re going to Raw.’ And I was like, ‘All right.’”
Despite the sudden shift, Evans said the moment still hit him hard—especially given the timing tied to Cena’s farewell appearance.
“You know what I mean? It was crazy. And of course, they were telling me, ‘Hey, NXT is still here for you—don’t forget about it.’ And I just remember the feeling—like, dang, y’all telling me this on Cena’s last show. That’s crazy. But it was a great feeling.”
Even with the opportunity in front of him, Evans admitted there was a part of him that wasn’t quite ready to leave NXT behind—especially with unfinished business still on his mind.
“A part of me wanted to say back, like ‘Man, I really want this NXT title too’? Like, ‘Can I stay a little longer, get that title, and then go?’ I most definitely had those thoughts. But Triple H knows what he’s doing. He’s been in the business for a long time. So I feel like if he has a feeling that somebody’s ready to get called up—yeah.”
Between the last-minute meeting, the involvement of Triple H, and the timing tied to Cena’s final show, Evans’ call-up was anything but routine—and it shows just how quickly things can change in WWE.
