Jeff Hardy apparently took one look at his chance to help book TNA iMPACT and decided it was time to crack open the Attitude Era playbook.
Matt Hardy revealed that he and Jeff have been tossing around ideas for the October 15 episode of TNA iMPACT, which the brothers are getting a hand in putting together. Ladders? Obviously. Tables? You know it. But Jeff also jokingly floated something much crazier — bringing back a bra and panties match.
Matt explained on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy that TNA isn’t just slapping the Hardys’ names on the episode and calling it a day. He said he’s already been sitting down with the creative team and figuring out exactly what a show built around their ideas should look like.
“It’s not rumor and innuendo. It is a Matt Fact. They are handing over the reins to us. But let’s be honest, everybody knows it is to me when it comes to putting together the show that is happening on the 13th. Yes, it’s going to be the 13th on Tuesday in Dothan, Alabama. The very first episode which is going to air on October 15th, which will be our first day of our 35th year, which is pretty amazing. You know, it’s pretty cool. So, we are getting—it’s not like they’re just saying it. I sat down and talked with everybody, like, this is kind of what I think the Hardys would do for a show.”
Once Matt started asking Jeff what he wanted on the card, Brother Nero didn’t exactly reinvent himself. His first instinct was pure Hardy Boyz. Matt immediately decided a ladder wasn’t enough.
“One of the funniest things, John, I just got to share with you. Jeff just said, ‘Yeah, man.’ Jeff threw out some ideas and they were some good. He said, ‘Well, you know, we’ve got to have some sort of ladder match. You know, we got to figure that out.’ Of course.”
“I said, ‘I think we’re going to need a table, too.’ I mean, that’s kind of like two of our, you know, big M.O.s.”
Then things went completely off the rails. Jeff started thinking about the Hardys’ roots in WWE’s Attitude Era and joked about dusting off one of the most infamous stipulations from that period.
“And Jeff said, ‘Man, I was just thinking about, man, I know there’s a couple of girls, like remember when they took Mila’s shirt off the other way.’ He said, ‘Man, we should—like, we’re like Attitude Era guys. What if we have like a bra and panties match?’ Which popped me, and so I don’t know if we can get away with that, Brother Nero.”
Before anybody starts wondering whether TNA is actually about to turn the clock back 25 years, Matt made it clear Jeff was joking. The bra and panties idea wasn’t presented as some serious demand, but it definitely got a laugh during the brothers’ creative session.
“What he was saying in jest as well, but it was very funny. We had a lot of conversations. I said, ‘Dude, I’m going to do like a creative call with the team coming up.’ I said, ‘So, talk to me. Like, what are you thinking? What would you like to do?’ So we’ve got some real good creative ideas and I think people are going to greatly enjoy the show.”
The Hardys are already in the middle of a chaotic stretch in TNA, including their ongoing issues with Syx heading into Bound For Glory. Ringside News previously covered Joseph Sawyer and Samuel Shaw being revealed as the mystery attackers targeting The Hardys, giving Matt and Jeff plenty going on before they even start playing booker.
Matt also teased that the October 15 episode will feature multiple matches he believes fans will consider “bangers,” along with a gimmick match, plenty of vignettes and at least one spontaneous match. In other words, TNA handed the Hardys some creative freedom, and Matt sounds determined to squeeze every drop out of it.
A bra and panties match probably isn’t making its grand comeback just because Jeff Hardy cracked a joke, but the fact that ladders, tables and Attitude Era insanity were all part of the brainstorming session tells you exactly what kind of creative meeting the Hardys were having. If TNA wanted boring and predictable, they probably picked the wrong brothers.
