Ilja Dragunov is finally addressing the reaction to his brief but heavily discussed spot with Brock Lesnar at the 2026 WWE Royal Rumble 2026, and his take is very different from the criticism that followed.

During an interview with Adrian Hernandez, Dragunov responded directly to the backlash over the spot, where Lesnar no-sold his chops and eliminated him quickly. While some fans and even talent backstage questioned how the moment played out, Dragunov made it clear he saw it in a completely different light.

“Oh my god, I was absolutely stunned. Like, guys, please—I was toe-to-toe in front of Brock Lesnar. How many people in this lifetime can do this? Brock Lesnar has been so influential and so significant for the entire history of this company. And having the chance to just have this moment—it was perfectly expressing who I am—is just stunning.”

Rather than focusing on the elimination itself, Dragunov framed the moment as a reflection of his identity; someone willing to step up to anyone, regardless of the outcome. He made it clear it was a medal towards himself since he brought the fight to the Beast Incarnate.

“Of course, I’m the guy who steps up to the biggest beast that you can possibly imagine, and I don’t hold back. Of course, you’re going to lose fights in your life. But the person that I—Ilja Dragunov—am is, I’m going to step up, I’m going to face my fear, I’m not going to hold back. And if I need to suffer the punishment from that, I gladly will do so. Some people will not understand that and say, ‘Oh, he just got ragdolled out of it,’ but I take it as a medal towards myself that I brought the best fight that I could bring to an absolute beast.”

Dragunov also revealed that Brock Lesnar’s reaction wasn’t something he was told about ahead of time, pointing to how unpredictable those moments can be in the ring.

“No, I had no idea. I mean, you never know what would happen. Even outside of this scenario—I don’t know if people still believe that everything is just made step by step, motion by motion, scene with the camera angle. No—it’s like action with one cut. There are a lot of things that happen organically, and you don’t know how everything will work out. So yeah, most things—I roll with the punches.”

As previously reported, several wrestlers backstage privately reacted to fan praise of the spot with eye-rolling emojis, suggesting not everyone agreed with how the sequence made Dragunov look, especially with Lesnar not selling any of his offense.

Still, Dragunov isn’t backing down from the moment. If anything, he sees it as proof of exactly who he is: someone willing to stand in front of the biggest name possible and take the fight head-on, no matter how it ends.

Do you think Ilja Dragunov is right to view that Royal Rumble moment as a positive, or did it hurt his momentum regardless? Let us know your thoughts.
