Gunther didn’t just step into the ring with Goldberg hoping to survive the moment—he walked in with a clear goal to deliver something memorable for one of wrestling’s most dominant legends.
While speaking during a WWE Retrospective, Gunther looked back at his match against Goldberg and revealed that the idea of facing him had been discussed long before the match ever happened. Once the opportunity became real, he knew exactly what he wanted to accomplish.
He explained that he didn’t originally set out to wrestle Goldberg as a career goal, but once the possibility was presented, he fully embraced the challenge and wanted to make it count.
“Hunter was asking me about it almost like a year before where it’s like, ‘Do you wanna do that?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I want to. I want to wrestle Bill Goldberg and I want to have, yeah the best match that he maybe ever had.’”
Gunther also admitted the moment carried a surreal feeling because Goldberg was someone he grew up watching during his younger years.
Even after everything was said and done, Gunther made it clear he walked away satisfied with the performance and proud of what they delivered together.
“I think that I was very happy with that match and that definitely exceeded expectations.”
Gunther continues building his legacy as one of WWE’s most dominant forces, but moments like facing Goldberg show that even the toughest competitors still value the chance to test themselves against legends from earlier generations.
