GUNTHER did not take his loss to Cody Rhodes at WWE Clash in Italy well, and the company made sure everyone saw it in new footage.
After falling short in the opening match of the Premium Live Event, WWE took to Twitter and uploaded a video showing The Ring General backstage immediately after the controversial defeat. The video showed GUNTHER storming through the backstage area with a massive scowl on his face before angrily throwing away a water bottle. WWE acknowledged GUNTHER’s mood in the caption that accompanied the footage.
“. @Gunther_AUT is NOT HAPPY backstage after his match with Cody Rhodes! 😲”
The reaction came after a highly physical Undisputed WWE Championship match that opened Clash in Italy from the Inalpi Arena in Turin. Cody Rhodes ultimately retained the title after hitting GUNTHER with a Cross Rhodes for the win.
However, the finish immediately became a point of controversy. As Rhodes scored the three-count, GUNTHER’s foot appeared to be underneath the bottom rope. Following the match, GUNTHER protested the decision, arguing that the pin should not have counted.
The loss marked a major setback for GUNTHER, who had spent months trying to get the title shot. After cashing in a favor owed by Paul Heyman and defeating Royce Keys to officially secure the title match, GUNTHER was ready to win the Undisputed WWE Title in Italy.
Instead, Cody Rhodes survived one of his toughest challenges yet and walked out of Turin still Undisputed WWE Champion. Based on GUNTHER’s backstage reaction and the controversial nature of the finish, it would not be surprising if he continued to pursue Rhodes and the championship in the coming weeks.
