Davey Boy Smith Jr. was backstage at WWE again over the weekend, and apparently seeing CM Punk got him thinking about old times. After posing with Punk in Calgary, Smith teased that they might just end up sharing a WWE ring again someday.

Smith was visiting WWE’s August 23 live event in his hometown of Calgary and took to Twitter the following day with a photo of himself and Punk. He mentioned their history together before slipping in a pretty interesting “you never know” at the end.

“Was really great seeing some old friends from the past tonight backstage at WWE Live Event in home city of Calgary AB Canada!!! I had been on both same side and opposite teams with @CMPunk CM Punk in the past. One day that might happen again…you never know….”

That doesn’t mean Smith is suddenly back with WWE. As far as anyone knows, he was simply visiting backstage and catching up with people he knew from his previous runs with the company. Back in 2024, Smith admitted there was still a part of him that wanted another chance with the company. He wasn’t asking for much either—just an actual opportunity to show what he could do.

“There is (that part me that wants another WWE run to show what I can do)… all that I have asked for is the opportunity and a fair chance with some momentum behind it and you never say never.”

His last WWE run certainly didn’t give him much of that. Smith re-signed with WWE in 2021 and wrestled exactly one dark match alongside Austin Theory. Then he disappeared. He never made it back onto WWE television before the company released him later that year.

That was a much different story from his first WWE run. Smith was part of The Hart Dynasty alongside Tyson Kidd and Natalya and regularly crossed paths with Punk during that era. Smith has done plenty since leaving WWE, including becoming AJPW Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion. Still, apparently another WWE run isn’t completely out of his head.

For now, it was just a backstage visit and a reunion with an old opponent. But Smith could’ve stopped at saying it was nice seeing Punk again. Instead, he made sure to throw in that they might do it all over again someday.

What do you make of Davey Boy Smith Jr.’s tease? Let us know in the comments.
