Adam Copeland was trying to get serious about the end of his wrestling career, but a few fans in the building apparently weren’t interested in giving him the emotional moment. Footage making the rounds online shows Copeland getting loudly heckled while he was discussing his retirement plans on AEW television.
The moment happened during the October 14 episode of Dynamite/Collision after Copeland defeated Josh Alexander in a Clockwork Carnage qualifying match. Copeland stayed in the ring afterwards and revealed that 2027 will be his final year as a professional wrestler.
While Copeland was speaking, several voices from different areas of the arena could be heard trying to interrupt him. The heckling continued throughout portions of the segment, with fans yelling everything from “Edge, you suck!” to repeatedly telling him to shut up.
“Edge, shut the f*** up!”
Other fans could also be heard using Copeland’s old WWE name while continuing to heckle him. The comments didn’t appear to come from just one person either, as different voices could be heard shouting during the segment.
“Shut up, Edge! Edge, you suck! Shut up!”
Copeland continued with his announcement despite the interruptions. He told fans that the clock is officially ticking on his career and made it clear that capturing the AEW World Championship is one of the major things he still wants to accomplish before walking away.
His sudden move toward the title wasn’t originally supposed to happen this way either. Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Jay White was believed to have originally been planned for Copeland’s spot in the Clockwork Carnage match before suffering an injury at All Out.
Christian Cage was also seriously injured at All Out, putting his reunited tag team with Copeland on hold. With White unavailable and Christian sidelined, AEW decided that moving Copeland into the Clockwork Carnage picture made sense.
That gave Copeland the opening to begin what could become his final chase for the AEW World Championship. But before anyone finds out whether that ends with one last title run, his retirement announcement has already produced a much louder reaction from some fans than he probably expected.
