Cody Rhodes is already back in the WWE Title picture, and a lot of fans are not exactly happy about it.
After losing the WWE Championship to Sami Zayn at Night of Champions, Cody punched his ticket to another title match on the July 3 edition of SmackDown. Adam Pearce booked Cody Rhodes vs. Jey Uso to decide Sami’s first challenger, and Cody won the match with Cross Rhodes.
That means Cody will now face Sami Zayn for the WWE Championship on the July 6 episode of RAW, less than a week after dropping the title. For some fans, that was all they needed to see before calling out WWE’s booking.
One fan took to Twitter and questioned the whole point of Cody losing the title in the first place if he was just going to get right back into the chase: “What the point him losing title just to make him #1 contender then get belt right back.” Another fan went off even harder, accusing WWE of dressing up what they saw as an automatic rematch.
“Who would have expected that? What a bulls**t to create that match to distract that the overpushed miscarder is getting an automatic rematch for the title although the automatic rematch clause was abolished years ago. So embarrassing!”
The frustration did not stop there. A different fan said they had simply seen enough of Cody in the title scene, writing, “Enough with this guy already…can’t you read the room. Everyone is sick of him. Give the title to someone else for christ sake.”
Another fan warned WWE that putting the belt right back on Cody would only make things worse, especially for viewers who feel the company is chasing online reactions instead of long-term storytelling.
“If Cody wins the belt on raw you’ll just confirm that all you do is ‘social media booking’ for short term clicks and all you’re doing is running away audiences as shown in viewership. Cody could be interesting without a belt or chasing one if y’all actually tried lol.”
One fan took things even further with a crude AI image involving Cody and Triple H, suggesting favoritism was the real reason Cody keeps getting these opportunities. The fan wrote, “You know why Cody always gets his rematch??? It is the reason.”
Of course, Cody did technically earn this shot by beating Jey Uso on SmackDown, so WWE can point to that match as the story reason for him getting Sami first. Still, the timing is what has people heated. Cody lost the title less than a week ago, and now he is already one win away from taking it right back.
Now RAW has a lot more pressure on it. If Sami beats Cody, WWE can prove this was just a first challenge for the new champion. If Cody wins the title back immediately, the complaints about WWE rushing back to him are only going to get louder.
