Shane Douglas isn’t ruling out a run in AEW — but he’s making it clear the company might need to rethink how it operates first.
The former ECW and WWE star addressed the possibility of working with All Elite Wrestling while speaking on his YouTube channel, where he was asked directly whether he would be interested in joining the company. Douglas explained that throughout his career he has never been someone who needed to personally like everyone he worked with, as long as the goal was building something successful.
“I’ve worked with a lot of people I didn’t like, and I’m sure some didn’t like me either. It’s not really about liking everyone in the office. Of course you want to build relationships and hopefully they’re good ones, but sometimes personalities just don’t connect.”
Douglas pointed out that his decades of experience in professional wrestling have allowed him to adapt to almost any environment, and he believes he still has something valuable to contribute to the industry.
“I’ve been able to work with almost anyone throughout my career, and I think I still have a lot to offer the business. What I bring is something that doesn’t really exist in the industry anymore.”
To explain his perspective, Douglas used a metaphor comparing the wrestling industry to a traveler searching for water in the desert. Douglas then shifted to a broader critique of the wrestling business, arguing that companies like AEW repeat the same strategies while expecting different outcomes.
“Think about it like this — if your horse has been traveling across the desert and there’s no water, and I’m sitting here with an oasis, you might want to bring that horse over for a drink. I’ve been around long enough to see that old saying about insanity play out — doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. If AEW keeps doing the same thing year after year and expects things to suddenly change, why would they?”
He suggested that AEW ultimately has to decide what kind of company it wants to be within the wrestling landscape. Douglas made it clear that he has always approached the wrestling business with a competitive mindset and has never been satisfied settling for second place. That mindset is why he would still be open to working with AEW — if the company genuinely wants the experience and perspective he believes he can bring.
“So AEW has to ask itself a question: do they want to become a major player in this business, or are they comfortable being the smaller alternative on the side? I know where I stand. I’ve never been content being second best at anything. So to answer the question — yes, I could work with AEW. I can work with just about anyone, as long as they truly want what I have to offer. And only they can decide that.”
Douglas’ comments come at a time when AEW continues to face criticism from some veterans about its long-term direction and creative structure. Whether Tony Khan would ever bring in someone like Douglas for a role remains to be seen, but the former WWE star clearly believes he still has something to contribute to the modern wrestling landscape.
