Ethan Page has absolutely no interest in becoming another WWE star whose entrance turns into a giant singalong. In fact, watching wrestlers build their entrances around that kind of crowd participation apparently makes him “want to puke.”
While speaking with Renae, Page was asked about changing his entrance theme and removing the recognizable “Ego” portion of his old song. The interviewer liked that part because fans could participate in it, but Page explained that getting away from that participation was actually part of the reason he wanted the change.
“Now, the song lends to letting people think it’s about everybody elstare. It’s very inviting to participate. Whether it’s in a good way, like I assume you enjoy yelling the ‘Ego’ part, or bad way, whereas people like saying the ‘a-hole’ part. I don’t want any of it. I don’t want people to buy a ticket to come to a show and say, ‘I can’t wait to sing while Ethan Page walks to the ring.’”
Page wants his entrance to be about Ethan Page rather than giving fans their own moment to perform. That led him into a much bigger shot at wrestlers whose entrance songs have become singalong attractions.
“Because let me tell you, the wrestlers that people pay to come sing to their songs make me want to puke.”
Naturally, Page was immediately asked to name somebody who fits that description. He wasn’t willing to put a specific wrestler on the spot, but he suggested anyone watching WWE could probably figure out which entrances he was talking about.
“You watch the show and if you want to—if you want to sing, ding, ding, ding.”
Whatever names fans come up with, Page wants nothing to do with that group. He believes what happens once the bell rings should be enough to make him stand out, even declaring himself the best professional wrestler currently getting a WWE paycheck.
“I am the best professional wrestler that gets a check with the WWE logo on it. So, yes. I do not want to be compared to a bunch of fake pop stars.”
Page then got even more specific about what bothers him. Whether it’s lip-syncing an entrance song, doing a signature hand gesture, dancing or waiting for the crowd to yell along at a certain moment, none of that is what he wants his WWE career to be built around.
“I mean, that’s what it is. You go town to town and lip-sync your entrance music or make your hand gesture or dance a certain way or sing along to your song or whatever it is. You know, get to the ramp and ‘Whoa!’ Who gives a crap? I’m not here for that. I’m here to win matches and ascend to the top of the WWE.”
For Ethan Page, the distinction is pretty simple. He wants people paying attention because of what he does as a wrestler, not because his entrance gives them something catchy to sing or a dance to copy.
“Yeah. I just don’t bring that to the table. That’s not—I’m not, like, I’m not Disney.”
Page never named the “fake pop stars” he was talking about, but he probably didn’t need to. WWE has no shortage of entrances built around singing, dancing and crowd participation, so fans can have plenty of fun figuring out exactly who made Page’s list.
