Dominik Mysterio wasn’t getting teased at school because he was on WWE television. He was getting questioned because his teachers genuinely believed something was seriously wrong at home.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Dominik looked back at WWE’s unforgettable 2005 custody storyline involving Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero and revealed that the drama became so convincing it spilled into real life. While millions of fans knew it was part of WWE programming, many of his teachers apparently didn’t.
When Ariel Helwani asked if going back to school after appearing on WWE television made him feel like “the man,” Dominik admitted it was actually the complete opposite.
“I didn’t think I was the shit. I hated it. Because no one understood what was going on, and the teachers thought I genuinely had issues at home, so they would call my parents in, and my parents would have to explain to them it was a storyline. It was a whole thing. It was serious. They had to go talk to the teachers.”
It wasn’t just the teachers, either. Dominik said plenty of classmates also believed what they were seeing on WWE television, leading to some awkward conversations at school about who his real father actually was.
“Some of the students were like, ‘Yo, don’t have a dad.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I do. I got two dads.’ They thought it was a shoot.”
The confusion only got worse because school staff knew Dominik was regularly missing classes to appear on WWE television. Then they’d watch the storyline unfold, seeing social services get involved on screen and Dominik seemingly being taken away from his family—only for him to walk back into school the next week like nothing had happened.
“The teachers didn’t watch wrestling, so they get told I’m not gonna be at school for a certain amount of time. Then they see what I’m doing, and it’s like this soap opera where their student is being told he’s not part of this family and he’s getting taken by social services. I show up to school like nothing happened. It’s like, ‘Where’s the social worker picking you up?’ I’m like, ‘My mom is right there. What are you talking about?'”
More than 20 years later, the Rey Mysterio-Eddie Guerrero custody storyline is still remembered as one of WWE’s most infamous angles. But for Dominik, it wasn’t just something that played out on television. It followed him straight into the classroom, where teachers became so convinced by the storyline that they ended up calling his parents in to make sure everything was actually okay.
