Brian Myers pulled back the curtain on one of WWE’s strangest long-term storylines during an interview with Chris Van Vliet, and it turns out he was actively trying to stay on a losing streak.

While speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Myers explained that once the Curt Hawkins losing streak started gaining traction online, he realized the gimmick had real value and didn’t want WWE ending it with a random television win nobody would remember.

At one point, WWE planned to have Curt Hawkins defeat Heath Slater on Main Event in Brooklyn, but Myers immediately pushed back against the idea. After being asked by Chris Van Vliet if it was true that he didn’t want the streak to end, Myers admitted he actually fought against getting the victory.

“Oh yeah, I had a fight to not end it. Yeah.”

Brian Myers then explained Vince McMahon’s original pitch. Instead of celebrating the idea, Myers thought the payoff would be meaningless within a day.

“Uh I was going to beat Heath Slater on main event cuz Vince was like we were in Brooklyn and Vince was just like, ‘Oh, it’s Hawkins hometown. Let’s give him one.’”

“Beating Heath like no offense, like it’s going to be forgotten by tomorrow, like by everyone, you know? And I was like, let’s see where this goes.”

By that point, the Curt Hawkins losing streak had already crossed into the hundreds, and Myers realized fans were finally emotionally invested in it. Myers even admitted he was basically “politicking” to continue losing because he believed the eventual payoff could become much bigger.

“It had to be like hundred something at this point. So, cuz hundreds when the article came out when that’s when I like embraced it and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s kind of cool. Let’s like see what comes of this.’”

“I’m sure a lot of people in WWE don’t politic to lose, but I was really trying.”

That gamble eventually paid off at WrestleMania 35 when Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder defeated The Revival to capture the RAW Tag Team Titles in Myers’ hometown. Looking back on the moment, Myers still sounds blown away by how everything turned out.

“I win the tag team titles in my hometown with my best friend and business partner in front of my wife and kid. Like, it was surreal.”

What started as a joke losing streak eventually became one of the most memorable underdog stories of that era in WWE, and Brian Myers clearly understood the long-term value before almost anyone else backstage did.
