AEW fans started heavily speculating this week that the company could finally be heading to Madison Square Garden — but a new update says nothing is currently happening behind the scenes.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, recent rumors about AEW potentially booking MSG were sparked purely by coincidence after both The Young Bucks and MJF separately mentioned Madison Square Garden as a dream venue they still want to wrestle in.
That immediately caused fans online to start wondering whether AEW was finally preparing to debut inside the legendary arena. However, Meltzer stated there is currently nothing booked. The report also revealed that AEW still has not been able to secure a Madison Square Garden date despite previous attempts over the years.
“This led to speculation AEW would be able to get a date there. This was just coincidental and there is nothing booked there.”
“To this point, AEW hasn’t been able to get a date there.”
Meltzer noted that back in 2019, AEW was actually offered a date at MSG before it was later pulled away.
“In 2019 they were offered a date, but it was rescinded and nothing has changed since.”
Even though AEW has never officially run Madison Square Garden, Meltzer believes the company would likely have no issue selling out a pay-per-view there for a first-time event. At the same time, he also explained why AEW may not view MSG as financially practical compared to other New York venues.
“AEW would easily sell out a PPV in that building the first time in, but it’s probably cost effective to instead run Louis Armstrong Stadium as MSG is super expensive to shoot television out of between venue costs and union costs.”
The update comes as AEW continues preparing for AEW Double or Nothing while also building some of its strongest ticket sales momentum in the United States this year. At this point, though, it sounds like AEW fans still shouldn’t expect Madison Square Garden to happen anytime soon despite the constant speculation.
