Conrad Thompson has already taken plenty of heat for calling Roman Reigns overrated. Now one fan thinks they’ve figured out the real reason behind it: Cody Rhodes.
Thompson wasn’t having that one. The accusation came after Thompson spent days defending his claim that Roman is the most overrated main-event star in WWE history. One fan pointed directly to Thompson’s friendship with Cody and suggested that explained everything.
“We know that’s the main reason @HeyHeyItsConrad. You’ve made that really evident.”
Thompson immediately fired back with a pretty obvious question: what exactly would Cody get out of him criticizing Roman on a podcast?
“So what’s the payoff? How does me sharing my opinion on my own podcast benefit Cody? What’s the upside? I’m missing it. They’re not in the same storyline and haven’t been for a long time. They’re in totally different lanes. Is Cody my only friend there? Silly.”
The whole thing stems from Thompson’s comments about Roman on Something to Wrestle with JBL. After his original take lead to days of backlash, Thompson doubled down and brought Brock Lesnar into the argument. His point was that Brock spent years getting hammered for working a limited schedule despite becoming one of WWE’s biggest attractions, while Roman routinely gets thrown into GOAT conversations without receiving the same treatment.
“Brock had Paul Heyman do it. He was a part-timer. All kinds of negativity. And I asked myself, ‘Why does Roman get a pass?’ I don’t understand.”
None of that means Thompson thinks Roman isn’t a star. He has repeatedly said WWE ultimately succeeded in making Reigns its top guy. He just doesn’t believe Roman belongs in the GOAT conversation as easily as some fans do.
That opinion has already earned Thompson hate mail. Now it has apparently turned into a Cody Rhodes conspiracy too. Thompson’s response was simple: Cody and Roman aren’t even occupying the same lane right now, his podcast opinion does nothing for Cody, and Cody certainly isn’t his only friend in WWE.
