Cody Rhodes thought he had the ultimate flex on the set of Street Fighter — then 50 Cent came along and absolutely smoked him.
During a new appearance on Complex’s Sneaker Shopping, Rhodes opened up about life behind the scenes on the upcoming Street Fighter movie and revealed that the cast had basically turned gift-giving into a friendly competition.
Cody said everyone was trying to do something memorable for the cast and crew. His move was pretty massive on its own: he organized a yacht outing in Sydney, complete with specially made “Sonic Boom” cocktails tied to his Guile character. Rhodes admitted he thought he might have won the whole thing with that setup. Cody said he even had custom drinks made for the occasion.
“Everyone was doing something. A night out with a cast dinner provided by such. You got the cast, you got the crew. I did a yacht thing. I thought that would be fun.”
“I had made specially cocktails, Sonic Booms. So, I thought I might have put this in the end zone, right?”
Then 50 Cent stepped in — and apparently ended the competition on the spot. According to Rhodes, 50 rented out an entire classic theme park in Sydney for the cast and crew. Cody said the invite was so broad that even people who were barely connected to the production were welcome to come along.
“It’s a full classic theme park that’s right there in Sydney, been around forever, beautiful. You rented the entire thing out and brought the entire — if you were even outside of the studio saying, ‘I worked on the movie,’ you were coming and you had it for all night.”
Cody said there was even a magician at the end of the night, which apparently made it obvious nobody else was going to top what 50 had just pulled off.
“There was a magician at the end. He made it very clear, we don’t have to do this anymore because no one’s going to do it better than 50.”
That is saying something, because the Street Fighter cast is loaded with huge names from wrestling, Hollywood, comedy and music. Cody plays Guile in the movie, while Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson plays Balrog. Roman Reigns is also part of the cast as Akuma, alongside names including Jason Momoa, Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji.
Cody’s role in the movie also ended up becoming much bigger than originally planned. Andrew Schulz recently revealed that Rhodes impressed the production so much that additional material was added and his time on the project essentially doubled.
Rhodes has fully embraced the Guile role during the movie’s rollout as well. Earlier this year, he showed up at a Street Fighter trailer event dressed as the iconic character and cut a promo while staying in character.
For all the star power surrounding the movie, though, 50 Cent apparently won the battle that had nothing to do with fighting. Cody brought the yacht, the themed cocktails and a pretty serious attempt to take care of the cast — then 50 rented out an entire theme park and basically told everybody else to put their wallets away.
Do you think Cody Rhodes’ yacht night could have competed with 50 Cent renting out an entire theme park, or was that game over the second 50 made his move? Let us know what you think and leave your feedback in the comments.
