Cody Rhodes isn’t letting up on Pat McAfee as WrestleMania 42 gets closer, and he just dropped one of his sharpest lines yet about the situation.
While speaking with Rich Eisen during his WrestleMania media tour, Rhodes talked about the ongoing storyline where Pat McAfee has possession of the WWE Championship. The moment came up when Rhodes joked about showing up without the title, before turning serious about how bad he thinks the image looks. Rhodes said the visual of McAfee holding WWE’s biggest prize reminded him of moments that upset fans in the past, including some of the strangest and most controversial visuals in wrestling history.
“Yeah. Pat… the most offensive image probably in wrestling history. Uh and there's been a few along the way and and this is not a knock on any of these. The gobbledy gooker when they did that. Uh David Arquette winning the world championship always upset fans.”
He then doubled down and made it clear exactly what image he was talking about — McAfee holding the WWE Championship while standing next to Randy Orton, the same man Rhodes is set to face at WrestleMania.
“I think the most offensive image in wrestling history is probably Pat McAfee holding up the WWE Championship while standing next to Randy Orton, the actual guy, yes, that I'm wrestling at WrestleMania. And it's even worse because he's over there in the Thunderdome and it's just sitting there. The richest prize in our game… could I get another one? Sure.”
Rhodes also made it clear that getting the title back isn’t just about him — he sees it as something he owes to the fans heading into WWE’s biggest show of the year.
“It's modern company, you know. Maybe there's a… could I get another one? But I think it's important that we get that one back for the fans and I'd feel I wasn't a good advocate for them if I didn't get this out of Pat's hands.”
With WrestleMania 42 almost here, Rhodes keeps turning up the pressure on McAfee and adding more fuel to the story involving Randy Orton. If this keeps building, it could end up being one of the more talked-about moments heading into the show.
