Cody Rhodes isn’t hiding what drives him anymore. After surviving a brutal post-WrestleMania attack from Randy Orton that left him dealing with a serious orbital injury, Rhodes found himself in unfamiliar territory. The WWE Champion was forced to step away, recover at home, and spend time with his family while healing from one of the most painful injuries of his career.

During a conversation with Joe Tessitore, Rhodes opened up about why returning to WWE television as quickly as possible mattered so much to him. Rhodes explained that while many top stars choose a more selective schedule, he has always preferred being present every week and carrying the responsibility that comes with being WWE Champion. He pointed to consistency as one of the biggest traits shared by the industry’s top stars.

“I’m addicted to the top spot. I’m not afraid to tell anybody that.”

The champion went on to explain that he doesn’t view his role the same way as others who may prefer a “less is more” approach. Instead, Rhodes wants to remain visible and continue showing up for WWE fans every week.

“I’ll be here every week and I’ll see this team every week. It’s just, it’s not a matter of who’s right or wrong, it’s my preference.”

Rhodes also revealed that challengers like Ricky Saints helped pull him out of the disappointment he felt after WrestleMania. Despite leaving the event as champion, he admitted he didn’t necessarily feel like a winner following the attack from Orton and needed new opponents to refocus his attention.

That mindset has helped Rhodes remain one of WWE’s most visible stars throughout his championship reign. Even after dealing with a painful injury and weeks of recovery, he appears more motivated than ever to keep his place at the top of the company.

With Gunther waiting for him at Clash in Italy, Rhodes is about to face another major test. If his latest comments are any indication, he’s not interested in giving anyone an opportunity to take his spot anytime soon.
