The July 6 episode of WWE RAW went down at the Allstate Arena, and fans really wanted a good show. CM Punk hasn’t been seen since WrestleMania, but that changed tonight.
CM Punk’s WWE hiatus wasn’t caused by any creative issues, but that didn’t stop fans from putting on their tinfoil conspiracy theory hats. Everything came to a head in Chicago, as many great stories with CM Punk do.
Sami Zayn captured the championship in a surprise win over Cody Rhodes in a triple threat match with GUNTHER at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia, but Cody didn’t have to wait long to get another shot at the gold. Their rematch was scheduled to headline this week’s episode of Raw in front of a packed crowd in Chicago.
Things changed before the match could even happen. GUNTHER attacked Cody backstage and drove him through a table onto the concrete floor, sending him to a local medical facility. Cody was ruled unable to compete, so Adam Pearce announced that Sami would still defend the title that night without revealing the challenger. Later in the show, Nick Aldis told Pearce he had found an opponent, and the Chicago crowd immediately began chanting for CM Punk ahead of the main event.
Sami Zayn made his way out to the ring, and fans started chanting for CM Punk. As Sami waited in the ring, the camera showed the back door to the Allstate Arena rise up to reveal the Second City Saint.
CM Punk made his way to the ring as fans in Chicago exploded for him. He walked through Gorilla Position and out into the WWE Universe who were all singing his Cult of Personality entrance music. This was the return CM Punk wanted in Chicago, and it was pulled off in a big way this week.
