CM Punk has no patience for anyone claiming he stole the Undisputed WWE Championship from Sami Zayn.
The accusation came up during Punk’s appearance on Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story? podcast. McMahon brought up criticism from people who believe Punk has become the kind of veteran he once spoke out against—an established star who returns and takes the title from someone else. Punk immediately rejected that version of events.
“Oh, I won the title.”
McMahon agreed that Punk defeated Zayn fairly, and Punk doubled down by pointing out that Zayn is hardly some young rookie who was pushed aside before getting a real opportunity.
“I beat that 41-year-old youngster fair and square in the middle of the ring. I’m guilty of doing what?”
Punk’s response was short, but the message was clear. He does not believe he was handed the championship or took something that belonged to Zayn. In his eyes, he entered the ring, defeated the champion clean and walked away with the title.
The criticism appears to come from Punk’s past comments about veterans, part-time wrestlers and established stars taking opportunities away from younger talent. However, Punk clearly does not see his victory over Zayn as the same situation.
Zayn had already established himself as one of WWE’s top stars before losing the championship. Punk also made sure to stress that there was nothing questionable about the finish. He won the match in the center of the ring and believes that should end the argument.
Punk isn’t apologizing for becoming Undisputed WWE Champion, and he certainly isn’t accepting the claim that he stole anything from Sami Zayn. As far as he is concerned, the title changed hands because he earned it.
