Chelsea Green is already looking beyond SmackDown after winning the WWE Women’s Championship, and Mexico may be her next stop.
During a conversation with Complex Graps, Green revealed that she has contacted WWE about bringing her championship to AAA. She did not say whether WWE approved the idea, but she made it clear that the request has already been sent.
“I already sent my text message asking to bring this title to AAA. Last night, I did it.”
The idea did not come out of nowhere. Green has a long history with Mexican wrestling, including her memorable Lucha Underground match against Penta. That match is still passed around online years later and regularly comes up during her appearances. Green said the footage resurfaces at least once a month, and she has no problem sharing it because it reminds fans that she can deliver far more than comedy when the situation calls for it.
“At least once a month, it goes viral to a certain group of people, and I get tagged in it. I always repost it because it’s such a flex.”
“It reminds people that I’m choosing to be the version of Chelsea Green that I want to be right now. We can all do those things. I don’t have fear. I’m choosing to be this character right now.”
The Penta match remains a major part of Green’s connection to Mexican wrestling fans. She estimated that around 40 people at her SummerSlam meet-and-greet brought up the encounter, despite the line containing approximately 200 fans.
“When I do meet-and-greets, like this weekend at SummerSlam in Minneapolis, I probably had 200 people in line, and I would say 40 brought it up. The percentage is really, really high, especially now that we’ve brought Penta to WWE.”
Green believes several recent developments have brought that history back into focus. Penta is now part of WWE, Ethan Page has appeared in Mexico and WWE has established a direct connection with AAA.
“Not only that, but we have AAA, and there’s the crossover between myself and Ethan Page going there. All these things that connect a simple white girl to Mexican culture and luchadors—it has blown up again.”
Green did not hold back when discussing her love for Mexican wrestling. She praised the fans, culture and history surrounding lucha libre and said the audience accepted her immediately when she first began working with AAA.
“There’s nothing better than Mexican wrestling. Being in Mexico, the fans, the culture and the lineage—it’s very unique and very special to be in Mexico and feel that.”
“The people in Mexico accepted me for all the junk I was saying. They accepted me, and they stood by me from day one. The minute I got to AAA, they were so cool.”
Taking the WWE Women’s Championship to AAA would fit Green’s plan for her title reign. She has already declared that her character is moving beyond being the president or North American savior and into what she calls “world domination.”
Whether WWE approves the request remains to be seen, but Green is wasting no time trying to turn her championship reign into something bigger than a standard run on SmackDown. A return to AAA with the title would reconnect her with the fans who supported her before she reached the top of WWE.
